ifnames command not found

or when using sudo you get the following error message

sudo: ifnames: command not found

In Ubuntu ifnames is provided by autoconf package.

autoconf is:

The standard for FSF source packages. This is only useful if you write your own programs or if you extensively modify other people’s programs.

For an extensive library of additional Autoconf macros, install the `autoconf-archive’ package.

This version of autoconf is not compatible with scripts meant for Autoconf 2.13 or earlier.

To fix this problem, we can install more using the command below.

sudo apt-get -y install autoconf

This command might take some time to finish depending on your machine internet connection.

You can also use apt command to install autoconf.

sudo apt -y install autoconf

Or if you have aptitude installed you can use the following command.

sudo aptitude install autoconf
